Crazy Horse Leather Care Guide
Caring for Your Crazy Horse Leather Bag
Crazy Horse Leather is designed to be strong and durable. It will hold up to any of the adventures that you plan to take it on. It can get wet for short periods of time and it is rugged enough to hold up to abuse and a heavy load. Our Crazy Horse Leather bags are made from the highest quality of leather and proven methods of assembly. However, it does require a certain amount of care. If you want your bag to hold up for years of adventures then you need to take a little time to properly care for it.
Drying Out a Wet Bag
If the bag gets wet you want to just wipe it down with a cloth. You do not want to store it or put it away while still wet. This could allow for mold or mildew growth. You can hang the bag to dry or put it inside out. Do not use a hairdryer or any sort of heat on the bag to dry it out. Applying heat to the bag can cause the leather to warp and harden. Your bag will last for years with proper care and you don’t want to ruin it with too much heat.
Cleaning the Bag
If you spill something on the bag the best thing to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth. It is important to not use any cleaners or detergents on the bag as it can discolor the leather. If necessary, you can use a toothbrush to gently scrub at stains.
Removing Scratches
While Crazy Horse Leather bags are designed to develop scratches to give them a vintage look if you get scratches on the bag that you do not like there are ways of getting rid of them. Take a dry cloth and rub at the scratch in a circular motion. This will move the wax coating over the scratch and darken the color back to the original color of the leather.
Over time the bag will develop different colorations that will add to the character of the leather. If you want to keep the leather in good condition for years you can treat it with leather cream or wax. This will help with durability and weather resistance.
Treating Dry Leather - Crazy Horse Leather Wax
If the leather on your bag gets too dry then you can treat it. You can use leather grease or leather balm over the leather. You want to make sure that you apply a very thin, even layer. A sponge can be helpful for that. Make sure to wipe off any excess with a cloth. The best thing to do is, try the grease or balm on a small inconspicuous area on the bag. Some treatments can change the color of the leather so it is best to make sure the product you have will not change the leather.
You should keep in mind that using these products can soften the leather and you do not want the leather to be too soft to hold its shape.
How to Store your Bag
Leather can stretch out over time. You should limit what you store in the bag for long periods of time. Anything heavy or overstuffed into the pockets can cause the leather to stretch out and sag. It is best to keep the bag hung and as empty as possible when not in use. You can stuff the bag with bubble wrap just to the right size to make sure that the leather bag keeps its shape.
You can keep the bag in a soft cotton pillowcase to prevent discoloration from dust or infestation by insects. If you are planning to keep the bag stored for a long period of time, you should make it a point to inspect the bag every few weeks. You want to make sure that there is no sign of mold or stretching of the bag.
