How to Measure Yourself for the Perfect Leather Jacket Fit

Buying a leather jacket online doesn't have to be difficult. With just a soft measuring tape and a few minutes, you can find the perfect size and enjoy a jacket that looks and feels made just for you.

Below, we'll guide you through every measurement step by step.

What You'll Need

Before you begin, you'll need:

  • A flexible tailor's measuring tape
  • A fitted T-shirt (avoid bulky clothing)
  • A friend to help if possible
  • A mirror

Take your measurements while standing naturally. Don't pull the tape too tight—it should rest comfortably against your body.

Step 1 — Measure Your Chest

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest, just underneath your armpits.

Keep the tape level across both your chest and back. Relax your arms and breathe normally while taking the measurement.

This is the most important measurement when choosing a leather jacket.

Step 2 — Measure Your Shoulders

Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder to the outer edge of the other shoulder across your upper back.

Stand naturally without shrugging your shoulders.

Accurate shoulder measurements help the jacket sit properly.

Step 3 — Measure Sleeve Length

Start measuring from the top of your shoulder.

Follow the outside of your arm down to your wrist bone.

Keep your elbow slightly bent to allow comfortable movement when wearing the jacket.

Step 4 — Measure Jacket Length

Place the measuring tape at the highest point of your shoulder next to your neck.

Measure straight down to where you'd like your jacket to end.

Different jacket styles may finish at the waist or slightly below the hips.

Step 5 — Measure Your Waist

Wrap the measuring tape around your natural waist or the widest part of your stomach.

Stand relaxed without pulling your stomach in.

The tape should be snug but never tight.

Step 6 — Measure Your Hips

Measure around the widest part of your hips while keeping the tape perfectly level.

This measurement is especially useful for longer leather jackets.

Step 7 — Measure Your Biceps

Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your upper arm.

Keep your arm relaxed.

This measurement helps ensure enough room for movement, especially with slim-fit jackets.

Step 8 — Measure a Jacket You Already Own

If you already own a jacket that fits perfectly, measuring it is one of the easiest ways to choose the correct size.

Lay the jacket flat on a table and fully zip it before measuring.

Measure the Chest (Pit to Pit)

Measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other.

Multiply this number by two to estimate the jacket's chest circumference.

Measure the Shoulders

Turn the jacket over.

Measure straight across from one shoulder seam to the other.

Measure the Sleeves

Measure from the shoulder seam all the way to the end of the cuff.

Measure the Back Length

Measure from the bottom of the collar seam straight down to the bottom hem

Final Fitting Tips

A properly fitted leather jacket should feel comfortable without being loose.

You should be able to:

• Zip it comfortably

• Move your arms naturally

• Bend your elbows with ease

• Wear your usual shirt underneath

• Feel snug but never restricted

Always compare your measurements with the size chart shown on each product page before placing your order.

A few minutes spent measuring now can help you enjoy a leather jacket that fits perfectly for years to come.
